3. AWI Annual General Meeting 2017
The Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) AGM is coming up in November this year. It is an opportunity for stakeholders to have their questions answered, have their say and elect industry representatives to the board. While often attending an AGM in person is difficult when there are many more jobs on the list at home the great news this year for the AWI AGM is that it will be broadcast live via Webcast on 17th November. In addition, AWI shareholders will also have the opportunity to submit questions online to the AWI Chairman and CEO to be answered at the AGM.
To keep up to date with information about the AWI annual general meeting click here to be taken to the website.
Formal notice and meeting papers will be sent to AWI shareholders in October 2017.
4. The Farm Table
It’s school holidays and the kids are back home using all the precious internet data – but they could be using it on something more worthwhile than funny cat videos.
With information for every member of the household, the Farm Table is becoming the one-stop-shop for all things agriculture. It began as a DIY hobby to enable farmers to find information online more efficiently. The Farm Table of the future will be a professional, collaborative and innovative platform that harnesses the collective knowledge of our agricultural industry.
On the website you can find information on weather and climate, innovation and agtech, careers, grants, rural networks and initiatives, business management and even a photography hub.
See for yourself what The Farm Table has that could help with your business or life in a rural community.
5. Campylobacter update
Are your lamb marking percentages lower than you’d like?
Campylobacter infection can reduce lambing percentages by causing abortions, still born or weak lambs. On properties where Campylobacter bacteria is present, hidden lamb losses can be 9%; however if an abortion storm has occurred then lamb losses could be up to 40%. Campylobacter is widespread and has been confirmed in many sheep regions in Queensland.
How do you know if your property is affected by Campylobacter? Firstly any foetal and lamb losses from any cause should be investigated. Signs that may indicate Campylobacter infection is impacting your lamb marking results include:
• Wide gap between scanning and marking
• Late stage abortion
• Still born or weak lambs
• Significantly lower marking percentages in maidens, greater than 18% difference
• Lambing percentage significantly below district average
If your property has any of the above concerns, Campylobacter should be considered as a possible cause. A blood test is now available that can detect direct exposure to Campylobacter in sheep.
Below are some resources and contacts if you suspect Campylobacter may be an issue in your flock:
- Western Australia Agriculture note
- Campylobacter Information sheet
- Coopers Animal Health information sheet
- Bestwool/Bestlamb information sheet
Or for more information speak to your local animal health product supplier or veterinarian.
