1. Community Wild Dog Control Initiative - funding available

awi fundingAustralian Wool Innovation (AWI) has helped 48 groups across Australia to conduct on ground activities to kill wild dogs by releasing cash payments from a project commonly referred to as the 'Kill More Dogs' initiative.

The AWI Board has endorsed a second round of funding for dog control activities and applications are open to new groups as well as those assisted by the original funding.

If you would like to apply, please complete the Wild Dog Control application form (PDF 104Kb) and submit it along with a map and project budget to wilddogs@wool.com. If you need clarification or assistance please contact Ian Evans at AWI on 0427 773 005.

3. Financial and social costs of wild dog attacks

awiAn ABARE report for Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has underlined the serious financial and social impacts of wild dog attacks in the sheep and cattle industries—with many farmers dedicating close to a month out of every year tackling the issue.

The report analysed the results of a survey of over 1000 landholders in wild dog-affected areas, and highlighted the importance of strong leadership and coordinated on-the-ground efforts to combat the problem of wild dogs.  On average, each landholder surveyed spent about 26 days and around $7200 a year on wild dog management, and that they were forced to remain constantly vigilant for attacks, especially during lambing season.

Those figures only take into account the direct costs of management efforts, like baiting and trapping, materials and so on. When you look at the financial costs across the whole sector—in livestock losses, disease transmission and control costs—wild dogs were estimated back in 2004 to cost our agricultural industries up to $66 million per year. The current costs could be significantly higher.

Another report was also commissioned by AWI titled 'Participatory wild dog management: views and practices of Australian wild dog management group', to view this report click here.

5. Video - Wild dogs in Australia

peter flemming

Peter Fleming is one of Australia’s leading experts on wild dogs. In Australia wild dogs are becoming an ever-increasing problem for livestock producers and also impact on native wildlife populations. This series of short video interviews with Peter talks about:

  • the wild dog problem in Australia
  • trophic cascade and mesopredator release hypothesis - a theory that if you remove wild dogs from the system that will lead to an increase in feral cat and fox numbers which will have a detrimental affect on our threatened and native fauna
  • the importance of community engagement in wild dog management.
