1. Sheep and wool challenge

Leading Sheep_Sheep and Wool Challenge 2017_1200x627The Sheep and Wool Challenge is on, so it’s time to get your creative juices flowing! We want you to create a short, entertaining video showing a solution to a Queensland sheep and wool industry issue. Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Leading Sheep senior extension officer Nicole Sallur said there are sections for secondary school students, where prize money is split between the school and the student, and an Open Category for over 18’s, including those at college and tertiary students. We have also included a people’s choice award with a purse of $500. Click here to read more.

2. Agri-business CEO mentoring program

IMG_9648-2Financial assistance for up to eight Queensland wool producers to take part in the Agri-Business CEO Mentoring Program during 2017 to access specialist advice, mentoring and support has been announced by the Queensland Government. The 12-month CEO Mentoring Program is a joint initiative of Leading Sheep and the Agri-Business Development Institute (ABDI). Over 12 months the Agri-business CEO Mentoring Program features three two-day workshops in Brisbane, monthly call-in mentoring sessions and accountability and goal tracking, regular group catch-ups, and training modules based on the ABDI 12 Pillars of Business Best Practice. 3. Tips for feedlotting lambs

sheep-in-yards-3Phil Kemp runs Prime Lamb Australia feedlot on the Darling Downs and has some advice for sheep producers who may consider finishing their lambs in a feedlot. With a brighter seasonal outlook, producers restocking, exclusion fences being erected, some very positive lamb marking percentages as well as lower grain prices the outlook for feedlotting lambs is looking much brighter than in recent years.

4. Farm biosecurity – it’s easier than you think

Farm Biosecurity Biosecurity is simply risk management. The risk you are managing is the chance of unwanted pests, diseases, or weeds entering your property, establishing, and spreading. From a food safety perspective, this also includes contaminants entering the food chain from incidents such as cattle finding those old batteries dumped down in the paddock. Click here to read more.
